Beds were first patented in 1900 by William L. Murphy. Mr. Murphy lived
in a boarding house at the time and wanted to entertain friends in his
room, so out of necessity Mr. Murphy found a way to "hide" the bed.
Needless to say his idea caught on and became quite popular. His son,
William Murphy (Bill) brought the bed into the 20th century with a bang.
In 1978 Donald Schultz met with the original Murphy family to sell and
represent their product. Mr. Schultz designed the first full line of
space saving furniture and started a national Murphy Bed franchise
system. Today the second generation is still going strong, selling
factory direct to the general public, via the internet and is proceeding
to bring the design and function of the Murphy Bed into the new
